Reinebringen

Reinebringen is the most famous hike in Lofoten. It used to be the most dangerous as well, but they built Sherpa steps almost all the way up to the top which makes it less challenging to hike. The Sherpa steps were added in 2016 and completed in 2021. It is 1978 steps to the top and quite a workout! I bet building the steps was an even harder workout!!

We borrowed hiking poles to do the hike. They were helpful to ease the burden of the stairs on the knees as well as keep us sturdy in the muddy section at the top.

There was a warning sign at the entrance of the hike that the Reinebringen hike was only open during the summer months. We felt comfortable hiking Reinebringen in that moment because it wasn’t raining or snowing, and the weather was anticipated to have minimal precipitation for the rest of the day.

The steps were sturdy and allowed us to traverse the steep mountain fairly quickly, definitely with heavy breathing and tired legs and lots of little stops to enjoy the view.

At the top of the steps, there was a muddy section from rain the previous days. Just beyond that was the viewpoint of the town and surrounding area.

Note how muddy it is up here. This is how it was the entire way before the steps were built.

It started to snow for a little bit after we had reached the top. This offered for cool pictures and also added mindfulness to how dangerous a hike could easily become if the weather turns and stays that way.

The snow stopped pretty quickly after, and the view disappeared behind clouds with no sign of clearing, so we happily began our descent.

The weather never improved the rest of our time in Lofoten, so we were grateful to have had good enough weather to hike Reinebringen this day.

The day prior, we met some travelers that were mentioning how bad the weather was. They had just arrived. We told them that we thought the weather was amazing as this was our first day of seeing the sun haha! Lofoten weather this time of year is constantly changing which makes the clear days even more special.
