朝ごはんと切子 (Asa gohan to kiriko, Breakfast and Kiriko)

In the morning, we had a variety of pickles and other foods to go alongside our limitless refills of rice and miso. I liked some of the toppings more than others, but they were all pretty good. The top row of the food grid was the most sweet, and the bottom row was the most bitter. The middle bottom was fish eggs, and the middle left had a very slimy texture. The flavor on the top right mushrooms was my favorite.

After breakfast (朝ごはん, asa gohan), another quick soak in the onsen before leaving!

Then we went to a kiriko (切子) making workshop where we each made our own kiriko glass. It is a traditional Japanese craft from the Edo period of cutting the class to create geometric patterns.

We tested on a practice cup and also decide our designs before drawing them directly on our own glass.

We learned the different techniques for the direction of the cuts. The wheel won’t hurt you, but it cuts the glass. If you are making a cut up and down on the glass, you push the glass down on the cutter. If you are making a horizontal cut, you roll the glass along the cutter. If you are making a diagonal cut, you incorporate both pushing down a and rolling at the same time on the cutter.

Kiriko was difficult to make it perfect, but it was pretty easy to make it look good.

Beautiful. It seems like one would wear safety glasses?!?

True! We wore aprons, but no safety glasses. I suppose all the little pieces of glass dust went straight into the wet sponge?
